BLM : COVID

Protesters first gathered at the SC State House around 11 a.m. in May 2020 to protest the death of George Floyd, participating in the national march called “I Can’t Breathe.”  In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the day started off peaceful, but hours later chaos broke out leading city officials to enact a curfew.  As the week progressed, Black leaders and the local police worked together, in a show of unity, to address the right to protest police brutality and advocate for Black Lives Matter. Both professional and amateur photographers followed the action and captured the amazing images shown below.

Photojournalist Gerry Melendez captures the story of Lexington Medical Center’s response to Covid-19. Melendez’s powerful images reveal a narrative of care and compassion as the medical teams address the devastating coronavirus pandemic; black-and-white images that offer hope against the threat of a virus that has gripped our nation and the world, stopped economies and taken the lives of millions.
